Unusual Options Screener
Learn how to scan unusual options activity, use Eden's filter templates, and review each contract before making a decision.
Last updated
Eden’s Screener scans unusual options activity. It helps you narrow a large market list into contracts that may deserve a closer look.
The Screener does not tell you what to buy or sell. A result is a starting point for research.
Use the Screener in three steps
1. Choose the symbols
Open Screener, then choose a symbol group:
- Whole market scans all supported symbols.
- A workspace scans the symbols saved in that workspace. You can exclude symbols you do not want.
- Custom lets you enter a list such as
SPY, QQQ, AAPL.
2. Choose and review the filters
You can build your own filters or choose a Template. A template fills in a group of filters for you.
Read the filters before you run the scan. You can change any of them. A changed template is marked Modified.
Select Apply when the settings look right. Select Reset when you want to clear the filters and start again.
3. Review a contract
The middle list shows one row for each option contract. Eden groups the unusual events for that contract into one row.
Select a row to open its Opportunity brief and Contract events. The brief explains why the contract appeared. The event list shows the individual unusual events behind the row.
Select Load more when more result rows are available. The live list checks for a new snapshot about every five seconds during the market session.
If the list is empty, nothing currently matches your symbols and filters. It does not mean the market has no unusual activity.
Filter templates
The labels Broad, Focused, and Aggressive describe how each template searches. They are discovery labels. They are not guarantees or risk ratings.
| Template | What it looks for |
|---|---|
| Bullish Conviction · Focused | Bullish-classified calls that are at least 5% OTM and expire in 7–90 days. Each qualifying event must have at least $250,000 in premium and execute at the ask or above the ask. The contract must show a concentrated burst, recurring bursts, or sustained activity. |
| Bearish Conviction · Focused | Bearish-classified puts that are at least 5% OTM and expire in 7–90 days. Each qualifying event must have at least $250,000 in premium and execute at the ask or above the ask. The contract must show a concentrated burst, recurring bursts, or sustained activity. |
| Concentrated Bursts · Broad | Several unusual events for one contract that occur close together. Each qualifying event must have at least $100,000 in premium. |
| Recurring Flow · Broad | Recurring bursts or sustained activity in contracts that expire in 7–180 days. Each qualifying event must have at least $100,000 in premium. |
| Million-Dollar Flow · Broad | Events with at least $1 million in premium. It does not filter by direction, call or put, or time to expiration. |
| Short-Term Momentum · Aggressive | Concentrated or recurring bursts in contracts that expire in 0–14 days. Each qualifying event must have at least $250,000 in premium and execute at the ask or above the ask. This template can include calls or puts. It is not automatically bullish. |
| Deep OTM Activity · Aggressive | Concentrated or recurring bursts in contracts that are at least 10% OTM and expire in 7–180 days. Each qualifying event must have at least $250,000 in premium. This template can include calls or puts. It is not automatically bullish. |
The premium limit applies to each unusual event before Eden groups events into a row. The total premium in the Opportunity brief adds the matched events for that contract together. A large row total does not mean every event was that large.
How to read a result
The result list includes these fields:
- Contract: The stock symbol, expiration, strike, and call or put type.
- Signal: Eden’s classification of the matched flow. It is evidence about the events, not a price forecast.
- Net premium: Bullish-classified premium minus bearish-classified premium for the matched events.
- Activity: The event count, burst count, and activity pattern.
- OTM: How far the strike is out of the money as a percentage.
- DTE: The number of days until the contract expires.
- Last seen: When Eden most recently saw a matched event for the contract.
The Opportunity brief adds more context. It shows total premium, net directional flow, the direction score, the active time window, and why the row appeared.
The direction score runs from -1 to +1. A value near +1 means most classified premium was bullish. A value near -1 means most was bearish. A value near zero means the classified flow was more balanced. This score is a flow classification, not a prediction.
The Contract events list shows each matched event. Check its premium, event type, classification, execution side, time, contract size, average option price, underlying price, and burst details.
Key terms
OTM means “out of the money.” The option’s strike is away from the current stock price. A higher OTM percentage means the strike is farther away.
DTE means “days to expire.” It tells you how many days remain before the option expires.
Premium is the dollar value reported for an event. A template’s premium filter tests each event. Eden can then add matched events together for the contract summary.
Ask / above ask describes where a reported execution happened compared with the quoted option price. It does not prove that a buyer opened a new position.
Burst means several unusual events appeared close together. Events no more than five seconds apart are grouped into the same burst.
Bullish / bearish are classifications of the flow. They are not promises that the stock will rise or fall.
Check the full picture
Unusual options activity can have many causes. A trader may be opening a position, closing one, hedging another trade, or using a multi-leg strategy. The Screener cannot know the full reason from one reported event.
Before considering a trade, check:
- The stock chart and current price structure.
- The option’s bid and ask spread.
- Contract liquidity, volume, and open interest.
- The individual event log, not only the grouped row.
- News, earnings, and other events that may affect the stock.
- Your entry, exit, position size, and invalidation plan.
Templates help you search. They do not find trades to copy, promise a profit, or replace your own risk plan.
